Nawale

Here is an excerpt from the April newsletter of The Refugee Response:

———————————————————

In partnership with The Refugee Response, and through a very generous donation from The Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland of one of their fleet vehicles, Wheels To Work got a great car to a great recipient. Nawale Zakarai is a college student studying business at Tri-C who has recently started her own Henna tattoo business - you can follow her and inquire about her work on Instagram here @naniya_ali.

She is the eldest daughter of 8 in a home with 10 people and her father, the primary earner in the family, is an independently contracted semi-truck driver who is regularly on the road from Sunday through Friday with the family’s only form of transportation.

The donation of this car means that Nawale can take her mother to work and to the grocery store; she can drop off and pick up her siblings from school, get to and from Tri-C on time, and start driving to and from appointments as she builds her Henna business and client base. It’s hard to explain how important this one thing, a car, can be. When we talked with Nawale about the challenges of not having a car, she told us:

“Without a car, life is very difficult, especially if you’re a student. You might want to go to school early, but without a car, you have to wait for the bus to come. If the first bus passes, you have to wait, like, 30 minutes for another bus to come. And within 30 minutes, you can be late for your classes."

A very special Thank You to The Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland for donating this great vehicle to Wheels to Work in support of Nawale and her family.
